Understanding others and communicating successfully

Sometimes it feels as if I am talking a different language to the people around me. That has been happening at work around a particular project for a while. The thing is, I needed to get agreement, some understanding to help move through a difficult, sticky time. I had felt like running away. These times are like trials to test our metal and reveal our true selves. I see it a bit like the need to apply heat to impure gold to remove the impurities and reveal the pure metal. The pressure applied to us allows us to show our real selves. Sometimes, pressure can reveal our ugly side.

This time though, I was standing firm with my faith that a solution would appear. Appear it did whilst flicking through some of my NLP books I came across the section on meta programs. These are our internal strategies for processing the world around us.

It dawned on me that the person I needed to communicate with preferred to get to know the details whereas I always prefer to see the big picture. That had been my mistake. I had been frustrating him with my talk of strategies.

Today I tried the approach of discussing the detail first.........we ended with an agreement for how we would tackle the project sponsor tomorrow. That is another battle, at least I will be fighting it with some support!
