Milton model got me out of trouble

Today I had a challenge to get my teeth into. It was around overcoming some negativity I had received about my work. Normally, receiving feedback about work, even when not positive, is not a problem. This time comments were focused at a personal nature and needed unravelling. On reflection, I had not been clear in the purpose of a document. I had left the readers to decide what the purpose of the document was for them. Not everyone reviewed with my intended purpose in mind.
To smooth the ruffled environment, I went to the top, to the Director. I though it was important to make sure he new I had set out with the best intentions. Bring on the Milton model. I chunked right up to the highest intention of my work. This purpose was to communicate the results of some project work so others could make use of what these projects had learned. The Director leant back when I said this. This was his objective too and with this in mind, my efforts couldn’t really be faulted. Having reached agreement, and in double quick time, around the purpose of the work, it did not take long to map out the full scope to be addressed and where I had left some gaps. We shook hands with an action plan in place and my reputation actually enhanced, in his view. Job done!
