I am not a business analyst!

A business case is under review and I have been asked to hold the analytical reins through the process. But, I AM NOT A BUSINESS ANALYST!

This is an easy scenario to get sucked into detail and a never ending circle of modelling possibilities and creating spreadsheets. The resulting stress is a great way to an early grave. The ever increasing complexity will also cause more fear in not understanding, particularly in those sponsoring the project. When it comes to the crunch will they then be able to look the evaluates in the eye and say they support the case? No.

I have adopted a different approach. What is needed right now is someone to step forward and give confidence to the team and business. This means understanding the perspectives of others. Being able to identify the valid questions behind the masks of others. Knowing when doing nothing is the right thing.

I have been doing this for a week now. I have made no new spreadsheets. I have listened, I have allayed fears. I have painted the big picture, clarified misunderstandings. I have discovered the real questions and answered them and dismissed those that just create noise. Turning people from fear and confusion toward clarity & confidence, now that is something I do.

Now is not the time to run into more analysis. The case is what it is. It is time to stand by it, be rooted & strong with belief in the work. What will be will be.
